Costa Rica Expat City Guide

Dominical, Costa Rica

Dominical Costa Rica serves as the entrance to the Southern Puntarenas region of Costa Rica. This area was relatively underdeveloped until 2010, as there was no highway access, causing it to lag behind the more popular northern beach communities. However, the town has gained recognition as a surf destination, with its incredible waves and pristine Playa Dominical beach, attracting surf tourists, expats, and digital nomads who prefer a laid-back, eco-friendly lifestyle.

Dominical and nearby Uvita are renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, considered some of the best in the region. Many of the newer communities are located above the beach in the nearby mountains, providing cooler temperatures.

While the beach is stunning and dotted with surf breaks, swimmers should exercise caution due to the strong riptides.  Costa Ballena, also known as the “Coast of Whales”, encompasses Dominical Costa Rica and is a mating ground for both Northern and Southern Humpback whales from December to April.

Additionally, the region is home to Sea Turtle nesting sites. The Ballena Marine National Park, located south of Uvita, is fast becoming a significant tourism and eco-minded expat destination. The area also provides easy access to natural wonders such as volcanic peaks, waterfalls, and national parks, making it an ideal location for nature lovers.
