Costa Rica Expat City Guide

Montezuma, Costa Rica

Located on the Nicoya Peninsula, Montezuma, Costa Rica, is often considered the endpoint for travelers journeying from Guanacaste. However, for those arriving via ferry from San José and the mainland, it serves as the starting point of their adventure.

The town is situated in Puntarenas province, which shares the peninsula with Guanacaste. Although it was once a remote fishing village, Montezuma has become a sought-after destination for eco-friendly and alternative-minded travelers and expats. As one source described it, “the whole town exudes creative individuality and embodies the essence of ‘Pura Vida.’ Water activities are a top priority in Montezuma, much like other beach regions.

Visitors can indulge in fantastic snorkeling and hiking on Torguga Island, where they may encounter capuchin monkeys, iguanas, peccaries, macaws, and other wildlife. Montezuma Falls is another must-visit spot, and travelers can also enjoy horseback riding, yoga, paddleboarding, fishing, and dining at the town’s numerous restaurants and bars.

Montezuma is renowned for its healing arts and yoga communities, and hosts a weekly organic farmer’s market. The town is home to both the annual Costa Rica International Film Festival in May, which attracts filmmakers and artists from around the world, and the Festival de Arte Chunches de Mar brings together musicians, artists, and craftspeople for a month-long celebration on the beach.
